Code for Sustainable Homes and Ecohomes

If you’re building an Ecohome or Sustainable home in Reading or anywhere else in the country, then you need to make sure that your project meets the standards set in the Code for Sustainable Homes Level requirements.

What is the Code?

The Code for Sustainable Homes became operational in England in April 2007, replacing Ecohomes for the assessment of new housing. (EcoHomes 2006 will continue to be used for refurbished housing in England and for all housing in Scotland and Wales.) A Code rating for new build homes became mandatory from 1st May 2008. As a method for carrying out environmental assessment and certifying performance, the Code ensure that new homes are more energy and water efficient, produce fewer carbon emissions and are better for the environment.

Why do we need the Code?

Currently, the UK’s homes account for 27% of the country’s carbon emissions, a major cause of climate change. And the construction industry is estimated to produce a staggering 100 million tonnes of waste every year. New homes constructed to the standards set in the Code for Sustainable Homes Level use construction materials that produce less waste, less pollution and have a more positive impact on the environment– and produce the sustainable homes that are better for their occupants.

How does the Code impact on my project?

Overall, homes that are built to comply with the Code for Sustainable Homes or Ecohomes schemes have lower running costs, which quickly offset any additional costs incurred in building sustainable housing. Occupants of these new homes are able to live a more sustainable lifestyle using less energy and water, and can recycle more effectively. Naturally, the Code for Sustainable Homes Level requirements bring new responsibilities for anyone wishing to build a sustainable house in Reading, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Hampshire and beyond. With our help, you’ll meet the requirements of assessment and deliver your project on time and on budget.
